- Overview
For Uthman Adewale, these words are more than a declaration, they are a philosophy of living and making. Over nearly three decades of consistent practice, Uthman has built a foundation that rests not only on fleeting inspiration, but on the steady rhythm of work. Each brushstroke, stitch, and layer of fabric testifies to his belief that creativity is cultivated through persistence, not luck.
This exhibition, No Work, No Creativity, brings together a body of mixed-media works that trace Uthman’s creative journey—one that moves fluidly between discipline and delight, foundation and freedom, work and rest. His practice, rooted in acrylic, ink, fabric, and found materials, is as much about process as it is about product. The tactile quality of his materials speaks to a maker deeply engaged with both his craft and his environment.
Across the series, we encounter themes that mirror the cycle of human existence: Foundation, the grounding of skill and vision; Livelihood, the acknowledgment of diverse labours that sustain us; Beauty, an ode to the elegance and strength of women; Weekend Relaxation and Family Vacation, reminders of the balance between effort and restoration; Eyo and Carnival, evocations of cultural pride, festivity, and collective spirit; and Story Story, where memory and imagination intertwine through oral traditions that shaped his early sense of wonder.
Together, these works form a visual rhythm—a conversation between the everyday and the extraordinary. They remind us that creativity does not emerge from silence or stillness, but from the continuous act of doing: working, reflecting, celebrating, and remembering. Through this exhibition, we witness not just what he creates, but how and why he continues to create.
