Overview
Ije Udo, meaning “Journey to Peace” in Igbo, is a profound meditation on rebirth, resilience, and the sacred power of the female body as both vessel and storyteller. In this body of work, performance and visual artist Victoria Ndubuisi transforms her personal journey through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum healing into a collective ritual of renewal.
Victoria’s practice blurs the boundaries between the ephemeral and the permanent, the performative and the painterly. Her performances, rituals of movement and release, serve as the generative act for her visual art. Covered in paint, she dances on canvas; each step, sway, and gesture leaves a trace of lived experience, allowing her body to become both brush and subject. The resulting works bear the physical imprints of movement and emotion, transforming each canvas into a visual memory of performance.
The exhibition unfolds as a journey through peace-seeking practices such as yoga, meditation, affirmation, and communal living, each woven into her visual and performative language. Through these acts, Victoria situates her personal healing within a broader cultural context, invoking traditional Igbo understandings of balance, feminine energy, and collective care. In witnessing Ije Udo, viewers are invited to engage with the visual echoes of Victoria’s performance, the resonance of its energy, and to see healing as a shared, ongoing journey.
By celebrating movement as a form of prayer and painting as an extension of the body, Victoria offers a space for contemplation and empathy. Her work becomes a quiet yet powerful reminder of the body’s capacity to remember, to release, and ultimately, to find peace.
