Gbolahan Ayoola (b. 1977) is a Lagos-based visual artist whose practice explores African identity, heritage, and the complexities of colonial influence. Born and raised in a palace environment shaped by traditional Yoruba culture and Christian beliefs, Ayoola’s upbringing, particularly the intersection of Esu and Christ, has deeply influenced his exploration of coloniality in African art.
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine and Applied Arts, Ayoola has built a career spanning over 20 years. His work has received international recognition, with pieces featured in collections including the World Bank, African Finance Corporation, and the National Gallery of Art, Nigeria, as well as on digital platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. He has also received awards, including the “54 Nigerian Art Masters” recognition from the Greek Embassy in Nigeria.
Beyond his practice, Ayoola is committed to mentoring emerging artists and continues to challenge perspectives through his thought-provoking work.
