- Overview
What does it mean to inhabit a life? Long before we translate our experiences into language, our existence is registered by the earth and recorded in the body. We navigate the world through a series of tactile negotiations: the physical strain of carrying weight, the muscle memory of a childhood game, the touch of tactile materials, and the rhythm of a footstep pressing into stone.
Groundwork brings together the distinct yet deeply symbiotic practices of Victoria Ndubuisi and Paulcy Odama, two bodies of work that meet at the same threshold where experience becomes form. One begins from the body itself as an active, sensing, remembering organism. The other begins from the things the body encounters, exploring how games, objects, and materials shape memory, relationships, and identity.
On one side of this material dialogue is the kinetic, visceral research of Victoria Ndubuisi. For her, the canvas is a wrestling match with gravity, a record of “what the body can do.” Her paintings are born from raw somatic endurance; she dances, pours, and strains upon the surface, capturing the fleeting architecture of human gesture long before it is intellectualised. Victoria explores the body’s own intelligence—its capacity to carry weight, absorb pressure, adapt, endure, and remember. Her paintings, emerging from performance itself, make the body simultaneously subject, process, and tool.
Directly answering this somatic energy is the reflective, nostalgic world of Paulcy Odama. Where Victoria maps the immediate, internal present of the body, Paulcy shifts attention outward to the objects that structure human experience, childhood memories, and our relationships with the world around us. Through narrative paintings and newly realised clay sculptures, she investigates the architecture of play. Works like Humans and Carousel and Humans and Kites transform universal games into poignant metaphors for human ambition and connection. These familiar forms reveal how ordinary encounters become foundational experiences.
By weaving their works together, Groundwork collapses the boundary between the internal self and the external world. Victoria captures the internal, immediate reality of physical survival and movement, while Paulcy documents the external structures and relationships that shape our identity. Together, they offer a complete look at the human experience, showing how we inhabit our own skin while navigating the world around us and reminding us that our stories are ultimately written in the earth.
