Emergence: Becoming & Belonging

Exhibiting Artists: Uthman Adewale | Tochukwu Orazulike

Date: November 5 – November 8, 2026

Federal Palace, 6-8 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos

Emergence describes the appearance of something that cannot be understood by examining its individual parts alone. It arises through relationships, through interactions that produce forms, meanings, and ways of being that exceed intention or prediction. This exhibition brings together two distinct artistic practices that, while differing in subject and method, are united by this understanding of how meaning comes into being.

For Tochukwu Orazulike, emergence is found within the material itself. Paint, water, spray, gravity, and time interact in ways that resist complete control, allowing the work to develop through a process of negotiation rather than imposition. Tochukwu’s role shifts from directing outcomes to listening attentively: to the behaviour of materials, to the influence of environment, and to the unexpected possibilities that arise through chance. Each painting becomes a record of relationships unfolding, where meaning is not predetermined, but discovered.

For Uthman Adewale, emergence is located within collective life. Belonging is not a fixed identity or an inheritance; it is continually produced through shared experience. Festivals, family gatherings, rituals, stories, and everyday encounters accumulate over time, weaving the social fabric through which communities come to know themselves. Belonging emerges through participation: repeated acts of remembering, celebrating, caring, and returning.

Although these practices begin from different points, both reject the notion of fixed authorship or singular meaning. Neither the artwork nor the community exists in isolation; each is shaped through ongoing exchanges between individuals, environments, histories, and materials. In one body of work, paint responds to forces beyond the artist’s control. In the other, identity is formed through the countless interactions that bind people together across generations.

Emergence: Becoming & Belonging proposes emergence as both an artistic methodology and a way of understanding the world. It suggests that becoming is never an individual act, and belonging is never a static state. Both are relational processes that unfold through attention, encounter, and participation. Together, these works suggest that what matters most is not the pursuit of certainty, but a willingness to stay open to what can only emerge through our relationships with materials, with one another, and with the worlds we inhabit.
