The phrase "subtly stentorian" combines the paradoxical qualities of subtlety and powerful resonance. "Stentorian" means extremely loud and commanding, derived from the Greek herald Stentor. Describing something as "subtly stentorian" suggests a duality: an understated, nuanced quality with an underlying intensity and commanding presence. “Subtly Stentorian” is an exhibition portraying tales of love, family, acceptance, insecurity, identity, traditions, and beliefs with a subtle yet commanding intensity.
The artists—Bella Mfon, Maryam Maigida, Faith Omole, Stephanie Kwaghe, and Paulcy Odama—explore the idea of a quiet, commanding presence in contemporary visual art. Their works use elegant forms and diverse palettes to evoke gravity, importance, and controlled strength.
Bella Mfon's art explores the interplay of light and darkness, mental well-being, and everyday challenges. Her mission is to create relatable and uplifting art that inspires viewers to embrace life's beauty and complexity.
Maryam Maigida’s mixed media paintings emphasize culturally inclined fabrics and motifs, preserving tradition. Her recent style, featuring ball-like fabrics she calls “chandeliers,” portrays women with elongated necks, exaggerated earrings, and African motifs.
Faith Omole’s work rediscover the genuine historical truths of African narratives lost due to colonization and slavery. Influenced by Adinkra symbols, her creations bridge reality and illusion, history and the present, grief and healing, intimacy and fallouts.
Stephanie Kwaghe’s vibrant impasto paintings and mixed media works explore femininity, masculinity, and human emotions. Characterized by bold textures and expressive brushstrokes, her portraits sometimes incorporate found objects like jeans, adding symbolism and depth.
Paulcy Odama’s art delves into the human experience, exploring love, death, and sacrifice. Her work invites viewers to contemplate existence's complexities and find meaning in life's intricate dance of choices and fate.
The exhibition emphasizes the transformative potential of restraint, the evocative power of understatement, and the way subtlety can convey profound significance and weight.
